Chemnitz
Saxony
For the year 2025, the Saxon industrial city of Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture. Meanwhile, the Capital of Culture Region extends to 38 partner municipalities in Central Saxony, the Ore Mountains, and the Zwickau region. All of these areas are collaborating to make unseen people, locations, and activities more visible under the motto ‘C the Unseen’.
As a member of the heimaten network, European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 is hosting the haamit heimaten festival, and in the process bringing a Saxon perspective to the decentrally organized network. In this choice of title, the term ‘haamit’—the word for Heimat in the local dialect—joins with the verb form of heimaten to describe the search, discovery, and making of homes. This poses some central questions: What does Heimat mean today, and for whom? How can more diverse narratives of the former East emerge, in contrast to the image of a supposedly ‘white’ East Germany?
