The Koordinierungsstelle zur Dekolonisierung Berlins (Coordinating Branch for Decolonizing Berlin) is an unusual project, hosted at the offices of Decolonize Berlin e. V. In 2020, the Koordinierungsstelle was commissioned by Berlin’s Abgeordnetenhaus (State Parliament) to reappraise Berlin’s colonial past in tandem with civil society stakeholders, political bodies, and administrators. Through a participatory process, a comprehensive catalogue of interventions was drafted in realms ranging from education, the sciences, urban space, memory culture, to international collaborations. After a resolution was passed by the Berlin Senate in 2023 to adopt a citywide Aufarbeitungskonzept (reappraisal concept) towards Berlin’s colonial past, Decolonize Berlin has overseen the implementation. For decades, the association’s member organizations have advocated for the recognition of colonial injustices and for society-wide decolonization.
