ADEFRA e. V. – Schwarze Frauen in Deutschland (ADEFRA e. V., Black Women in Germany) is a cultural-political forum for Black women, by Black women. Their activism has been central to the existence and formation of the Black movement in Germany. In the context of movement theories this is significant, as the role of female actors within social networks is often retrospectively marginalized. In Germany, Black lesbian activists of the 1980s were not only critical to the formulation of a Black feminist perspective, but were also instigators and generators of structures for the emergence of an organized Black community. Knowledge production about Blackness in Germany has been enduringly shaped by the vision, encounters, exchanges, and critical reflections of Black female activists.
