Köln
North Rhine-Westphalia
The Theodor Wonja Michael Bibliothek is Cologne’s first Black library, and the first library of its kind in all of North Rhine-Westphalia. It understands itself as a space for empowerment, education, and encounters. Focusing on Black perspectives and decolonial knowledge, it conveys an unprejudiced image of Africa and, in doing so, amplifies diversity and cultural self-knowledge. Functioning as a meeting point and safe space for Black individuals—especially those in Black communities who face multiple kinds of discrimination—but also as an educational facility for anyone interested, the library creates space for society-spanning dialogue between marginalized voices and those of the majority culture. This dialogue is furthered on an ongoing basis through literature, cultural work, and joint events.
