Southwestern Germany’s border region of Saarland is home to many heimaten. With the aim of making heimaten visible as a process and something that can be experienced, as well as celebrating it, the Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken is inviting various actors to collaborate: the German-Korean conceptual artist and designer Hojin Kang is creating an artistic work in the Stadtgalerie. Its creation will be accompanied by a talk held in coordination with the Bildungswerkstatt Kirchberg, a district education centre in Saarbrücken-Malstatt and, like the Stadtgalerie, a member of the Netzwerks kulturelle Bildung (Network of Cultural Educators).

Hojin Kang has developed an installation with pulsing sources of light that focuses on people with varying migration histories. Each individual light source represents a person’s breath—the breath of refugees, of people facing political repression, of artists, post-migrants, and other marginalized groups. Together, their breath forms the installation’s illuminated rhythm, becoming a living symbol of presence, resistance, and hope.

Using QR codes at the respective sources of light, visitors can access the individuals’ personal histories as well as their thoughts on home, identity, and belonging.
