Germany’s southwestern border region Saarland contains many Heimaten. With the goal of making heimaten visible and tangible as a process and of celebrating it, the Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken has invited a variety of figures. One of these is the German-Korean media artist and designer Hojin Kang, who had created a work of art for the Stadtgalerie. Its installation will be accompanied by a conversation in cooperation with the Bildungswerkstatt Kirchberg, a neighbourhood education center in the district of Saarbrücken-Malstatt. Like the Stadtgalerie, it belongs to the Netzwerk kulturelle Bildung (Network of Cultural Education).
Hojin Kang has developed an installation with pulsating light sources that centres individuals with varying migration histories. Each individual light source stands for the breath of an individual—including refugees, sufferers of political persecution, artists, post-migrants, and other marginalized groups. The breath of these individuals forms the installation’s illuminated rhythm, thus becoming a living symbol of their presence, resistance, and hope.
Using QR codes at the individual light sources, visitors can access personal histories and thoughts on heimat, identity, and belonging.
For the breathing workshops, no prior experience is necessary. Comfortable weather-proof clothing is recommended. The workshops will take place indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.
