Heimat, heimaten, beheimaten—what do these terms, grammatical variations of the German word for “home country” or “home,” actually mean? Hasn’t the concept of “Heimat” already been appropriated by right-wing forces and the so-called political center? Is it even possible to redefine “Heimat”? The editors at tuerspion believe that new words and references are needed. The editors at tuerspion believe that “Heimat” is the wrong term for yearnings, senses of belonging, and contradictions if the goal is to highlight different perspectives.
On December 24, tuerspion and guests raise a glass to the hot-off-the-press special edition dedicated to these questions. As some of the authors present their texts, sad cat will provide musical accompaniment.
This special edition comprises contributions from the tuerspion collective, the heimaten network, and from those who responded to an open call. They explore what it means to be at home, to be together, to stick together, to feel at home, estranged, or in between—historically, in the past, the present, and the uncertain future.
If you cannot make it to the release event, the edition is also available for order here.
